Due to the uneventful nature of our life I do not have any new personal information or stories to blog about. Instead, I am going to start my own weekly column. Hopefully you will find this interesting and learn a thing or two. I seem to find myself asking the same question over and over about random things I see or hear. The million dollar question: "What is that?" This will be my chance to share these thoughts and answers with you.
Today while pumping gas an ambulance was parked next to me. I had to fill up so I stood there a while. I kept staring at the snake wrapped around the rod on the ambulance logo... I thought to myself "what is that?". Why in the world would they put a snake, something I and millions of others are scared of on a vehicle that helps save peoples lives?
The Answer: This snake wrapped around a rod is known as "The Rod Of
Asclepius". It's an ancient symbol associated with astrology, in particularly
Asclepius (god of medicine & healing).

Reasons wikipedia says the staff has a snake on it:
*snakes shed skin and this represents rejuvenation
*represents the dual nature of work: physicians deal with life & death, as well as sickness & health
*snakes can hurt you but their antidote can cure you as well
While researching I found this verse in the Bible and thought I'd share:
Numbers 21: 4-9
They traveled from Mount
Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around
Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the desert? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!" Then the LORD sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, "We sinned when we spoke against the LORD and against you. Pray that the LORD will take the snakes away from us." So Moses prayed for the people. The LORD said to Moses, "Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live." So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived.
I hope you enjoyed my first "What is that?" Wednesday. Look forward to "Flashback Friday".
